THE BEAR'S POSTERITY
In olden days there lived a young man who knew the secret of magic. He always had a dagger attached to his waistband. When he sometimes was ill at ease among people or fell annoyed, he would go to the edge of the forest. There he would thrust the dagger into the ground whispering a spell. At once he would turn into a bear. As a bear he would wander in the forest. Having regained his spirits, he would come back, tuck his dagger down into his waistband and turn into a man again. One man discovered that the young man sometimes became a bear. Bearing ill-will (it was, certainly, a wicked man, you see), he watched the young man turn into a bear, then he picked up his dagger and threw it into the water.
The young man came back. He wanted to attach his dagger to his waist, but the dagger wasn't there.
That is how present day bear offsprings came into being.
